Blue Light Services (BLS) is proud to announce its latest partnership with HATS Group, supporting the rollout of a fully electric ambulance fleet at Hillingdon Hospital – a major step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for UK patient transport services.
This milestone positions Hillingdon as one of the first hospitals in the UK to deploy an entire fleet of zero-emissions ambulances, directly contributing to the NHS’s wider goal of achieving net zero by 2030.
And at the heart of this transformation? Smart engineering, dedicated collaboration, and a shared commitment to innovation.
Powering the Future of Patient Transport
Over the past year, our team at Blue Light Services has worked closely with HATS Group to develop and deliver a fully electric ambulance solution that balances environmental responsibility, clinical practicality, and fleet performance.
These vehicles – built on the new Renault Master E-Tech platform – aren’t just conversions. They are purpose-built, future-proofed electric ambulances, equipped with the same functionality and resilience as their diesel counterparts – minus the emissions.
Each vehicle was customised to meet the operational needs of the Hillingdon Hospital transport teams, including:
Spacious interiors with ergonomic seating layouts for staff and patients
Smart power systems for onboard medical equipment, independent of the drive battery
LED lighting and advanced HVAC units for efficient, comfortable conditions
Zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to improved local air quality
A Collaborative Approach That Delivers Impact
This project marks another successful milestone in our long-standing relationship with the HATS Group, a provider renowned for patient-centric, innovative healthcare transport.
Working side-by-side, we were able to:
Design and deliver bespoke ambulance interiors fit for electric platforms
Integrate advanced battery management solutions for vehicle longevity
Offer training and support for teams transitioning to electric fleets
Help visualise and deliver a consistent green-livery branding across the entire fleet
The result? A clean, modern, completely electric ambulance lineup now operating from Hillingdon Hospital – a powerful symbol of what’s possible when innovation meets action.
Hillingdon Hospital: Leading the Charge
The official rollout took place this summer at Beaconsfield East, where HATS Group and NHS representatives gathered alongside the BLS team to unveil the new vehicles.
The event was a celebration of progress – with staff and senior stakeholders holding signs that read “100% net-zero” and “Zero-emissions vehicles”, proudly standing in front of the new electric fleet.
It wasn’t just about new vehicles – it was about a shift in mindset.
“These ambulances represent the future of sustainable patient care,” said one NHS stakeholder at the launch. “It’s encouraging to see our suppliers working together to create solutions that reduce our carbon footprint without compromising service.”
Leading by Example – One Vehicle at a Time
At BLS, we understand that the path to sustainability must be practical, not performative. That’s why every element of the electric ambulance design was approached with real-world conditions in mind:
Range and reliability
Each Renault Master E-Tech is equipped with outstanding range to handle typical day shifts without disruption, supported by smart charging schedules.Adaptability for different patient needs
Whether it’s non-emergency transfers, mental health transport or bariatric support, the modular design allows us to build around the hospital’s needs.Cost-efficient over the long term
Reduced fuel, maintenance, and emissions-related charges are making electric fleets increasingly viable for NHS Trusts and private partners.
This isn’t just a test case – it’s a working model of what’s possible, already live on UK roads.
A Shared Commitment to Net Zero
The NHS is on a mission to become the world’s first health service to reach net-zero carbon emissions. By 2030, the target is for the NHS Carbon Footprint (direct emissions) to be net zero. By 2040, the broader NHS Carbon Footprint Plus (including supply chain emissions) will follow.
Through this partnership with HATS and Hillingdon Hospital, BLS is proud to be playing an active role in supporting that transition.
This rollout demonstrates the feasibility of electrifying entire ambulance fleets today, not years from now – with vehicles that are fully compliant, highly functional, and environmentally sound.
What’s Next?
This is only the beginning. Blue Light Services is already engaged in similar projects with other NHS partners and trusts, bringing next-generation electric vehicles into daily service across the UK.
We’re also continuing to innovate — exploring solar integration, onboard telematics, lightweight build materials and faster-charging capabilities to support a broader rollout of electric and hybrid emergency vehicles.
For healthcare providers looking to reduce their carbon footprint while modernising their fleets, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Final Thoughts
Sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s a responsibility – and it’s one we take seriously.
This collaboration with HATS Group and Hillingdon Hospital proves that when forward-thinking organisations come together, real change happens. Together, we’ve set a new standard – one we hope to see replicated across the UK healthcare system.
From diesel to electric. From ambition to action. One vehicle at a time.
